SPRING CLEANING

Spring is finally here – the clocks go forward this weekend! – so it’s time to tackle your outdoor space in time for Summer.

Clear the debris

Bin bags at the ready and a quality pair of gloves are needed. Always use gloves that are thorn-proof and cut resistant, to protect your hands from dirt, light cuts and scrapes. They’re also vital when using a cleaning liquid. We’ve had quite a wet and windy winter so you may have quite a lot of twigs to clear away if you have trees and bushes.

Sweep away the leaves and trim the trees

Use an adjustable rake or bristle brush, and opt for something lightweight and rust proof to clear any remaining leaves, it will be easy to store and use for some time. If your bushes and trees have grown very tall you may need to call in a professional to tidy up the top bits, otherwise a manual tree lopper is good. Evergreen hedges and low-level box hedges can be tidied very quickly with an electric trimmer.

Prep and plant

Tidy your borders, turn the soil and add compost or manure to encourage good plant growth. You can plant your hardier perennials now but it’s a little soon for a lot of plants – better waiting till April.

Clean your patio and decking

Don’t use a jetwash. Jetwashing can damage your surfaces, and will blast away any render, leaving gaps which are the ideal breeding ground for organic growth, algae and moss. Gently cleaning with a liquid cleaner like Monty Miracle is much quicker and easier with no heavy equipment – it works in just 10 minutes before simply rinsing away with a hose.  Apply a good sealant like Monty Miracle to ensure it stays protected all year.

Decorate

This is the fun bit. Now you can return any seating, pots and plants to your garden and patio, bring out your cushions and blankets and dust off your lighting, knowing that your patio is clean and maintained for the coming months and your garden is ready for growth. All we need is sunshine!
