Loving your outdoor space – our favourite things about the garden

An English garden is one of the best places to be.

In the Summer, it’s a haven of relaxation, and even in these colder months, we can see shoots and leaves coming through and giving us a taste of what’s to come.

Natural dry stone walls

It takes a really skilled person to create a strong, sturdy and good-looking dry stone wall. They really take a lot of time so when we see them, it brings a smile to the face, especially as they give such a nod to the past and our founder hails from English Heritage!

Good brickwork

We’ve seen some incredible patterns built into brick walls, from flowers to faces – and we’ve seen some brilliant elements like built-in bottle openers, curved brick walls and brick seating that works its way around a whole house. These are great touches, add personality and are a real credit to the tradespeople involved.

Trees

In all shapes and sizes. They are so important to the view, they provide welcome shade from the sun, they add colour and texture and they create places for squirrels to climb, birds to sit and insects to live. Some people complain about the leaves but it’s all part of the eco-system and nothing borders a garden with a patio, paths and driveways as well as a well-kept row of trees. The leaves can be tidied, used as compost, and your surfaces can be cleaned up quickly with Monty Miracle.

Bird feeders

In all shapes and sizes! Sitting with a cup of tea watching the birds come along for a snack is such a relaxing and meditative way to pass the time. 

Ponds

Water is a natural relaxant, the sound of flowing water in a small pond feature is great for mindfulness but even without a water feature, ponds provide a natural habitat for a whole host of creatures and insects. Spring is not spring without the frogspawn.

Pergolas

If a garden has space, these provide a great area to eat and drink out of the glaring sun. Decorative climbing plants add a touch of greenery if desired but we also love hanging lights, throws and cushions that add a touch of European holiday chic to the space.

Lighting

Lighting leads the ambience, whether indoors or out. A string of bulbs along a fence adds reassurance and security while providing a lovely backdrop, while a row of lights along a driveway or path enable people to come and go safely, creating a wonderful welcoming approach to your home.
